I was first introduced to and learned about nanotechnology in the movie theaters when I was watching the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War. Tony Stark, or Iron Man, had developed a new suit that was completely formed by nanotechnology. This was amazing to see especially in a movie as it is an art form. With that prior knowledge of nanotechnology, I was amazed to learn in this class that nanotechnology can be used in so many different artistic forms.
Nanotechnology could be used beyond the context of a superhero and science fiction movie. In fact, it can be used in art—an entirely different field of study and work. I learned that nanoart was much more than just a representation of the advances in technology. Rather, it is a way for artists the explore more abstract concepts like nothingness or things smaller than we can possibly imagine. It was another form of expression that involved both art and science. For example, Paul Thomas, in his writings focused on how nanotechnology can really be used to represent the immateriality of art, highlighting themes about how everything is not significant in the grand scheme of things.
Lastly, nanoart is still a developing field as we have professors and artists working together to improve the technology so that both art and science can advance. Ray Kurzweil, in his TED talk touches on these advancements, outlining a plan to help nanotechnology grow in the future.
